The Fifth Factor

It's official. I'm a mutant. Genetic testing came back positive for Factor V Leiden. Factor V Leiden is an inherited disorder the causes my blood to clot 3 to 8 times easier than "normal" humans (pussies). I have the less severe form of the disorder. My genetic testing indicated that I am heterozygous for the defective gene. The genetic information from one of my parents has the defect. I must have inherited it from my father. He has had blood clots in the past.
Some interesting facts about Factor V Leiden.

***5% of the caucasian population and 1 1/2 % of the african american population are afflicted
***heterozygotes (one defective gene) are 3 to 8 times more likely to form clots
***homozygotes (both genes are defective) are 30 to 140 times more likely to form clots
***most individuals with the disorder are unaware they have it until a blood clot forms
***The disorder is a result of one nucleotide base error (#1691) on the Factor V gene. Guanine is misplaced by Adenine which results in an incorrect amino acid. The incorrect amino acid prevents the complex chain of events from occurring resulting in hypercoagulation (excessive clotting).
***Treatment is indefinite anti-coagulation therapy (blood thinners)
***vitamin K is involved in clotting

So, I guess I'll have to give up on my cage fighting dream. Sigh

Stir Crazy!

Just found out I can't ride or "be active" for another 4 weeks. :( I can't believe how much I miss being able to ride a bike. It's been 11 days since I've even sat on a bike. This is the longest I haven't riden in 10 years. Unfortunately, this is my favorite time of the year to ride. I'm hoping to make an amazing recovery in the next week so I can salvage a bit of fall riding. Then maybe I'll stop whining about being laid up. The good news is....I'm lucky. Things could be much worse. We take a lot of things for granted in life, for example, our health. My recent woes have reminded me of that fact. I hope everyone reading this can appreciate their health and consider the consciences of their lifestyle. You won't be young forever and things will catch up to you. Stop and think about the things you really love.

That's deep.

Hey everyone! Meet my new friend. DVT. DVT is a nice little bloke who has decided to stay with me for a while. He's campin' out in my popliteal vein of my left leg. Silly rabbit! My popliteal vein is for venous return! Not dumbass emboli!

Oh well. Gotta deal with it. I'll just inject low molecular weight heparin subcutaneously into my stomach twice a day for 5 days and take coumadin indefinitely. That'll show that piece of clot who's boss!

Until he's gone, I can't ride a bike, fly in a plane or go anywhere further than work (gotta be close to a hospital for frequent blood draws to titrate my coumadin). Oh yeah, I almost forgot. This bitch likes to break off and travel around the rest of the body. He can cause a lot of problems such as stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or death. What a fookin' cracka! I'm about to go fishin' for him with a steak knife and a 40 oz. of St. Ides. Oh wait, I can't drink alcohol while I'm on blood thinners! Ha!

Geez.

Wow. These kind of people shouldn't breed.

Great

Well, my knee is fooked up once again. Every fall I seem to injure myself. I'm not quite sure how I did it, but I can't ride or even put much weight on my left knee. It was starting to bother me prior to the run-in with Dave at Wilderness. That crash sucked, but it was almost worth Dave's broken hand and my f'd up knee for the laughs afterwards. I wish I could have seen us rag dollin'.

So here's my prognosis....shitty. No riding for an undetermined length of time. Also, no more racing for the year. Sorry everyone. No cross races for me. You'll have to talk shit to someone else who doesn't give a damn. Hopefully I'll be able to salvage a few weeks of riding this year prior to the winter. That is all.
